Bud 'N' Naturalists: Discovery Activities for Young Children
Monday 9:30 - 11:30 AM, Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM, Sunday 1 - 4 PM. Entry included in museum admission.
Type: Public Program
Budding naturalists are invited to explore nature and history in the Bobcats Den. Kid-friendly activities and special programs are designed to promote experiential learning. Puzzles, live animals, games, discovery nooks and more await young children in this very special place to learn. Bud ’N’ Naturalists is made possible by a generous grant from the Lyon Foundation.

Your scout troop can enjoy fun and enriching activities at the Schiele Museum after dark! Camp In events provide a unique opportunity to experience programs and exhibits at The Schiele in a fun indoor camping adventure. Program options allow you to customize your event to meet badge or pin requirements. A late night snack and breakfast are included!

Canoeing the Congaree Swamp

Known for its giant hardwoods and towering pines, Congaree Swamp National Park's old-growth floodplain forest includes some of the tallest trees in the eastern United States. Enjoy this primeval wilderness by canoe. In addition to seeing one of the tallest tree canopies in the world, canoeing is also a thrilling way to encounter the diverse wildlife of the swamp including deer, river otters, turtles, snakes, and wild pigs. Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting

Join us for a celebration of 100 years of Boy Scouting in America and its special relationship to the Schiele Museum. Find out about Scouting's beginning in England in 1907, its movement to the US in 1910 and the work of our founder, Rudolph Schiele, as he pioneered the Piedmont Council beginning in the 1920's. View a display of classic camping gear and film's from the Piedmont Scout Camp days taken by Mr. Schiele himself.
Collections & Research: Behind the Scenes

Discover and examine seldom seen collections of the Schiele Museum. Visit with museum curators and find out about current projects in Research and Collections. See displays on 18th Century Lifeways, Mycology (Fungi), Entomology (Insects), and Archaeology (Human Cultures). Enjoy this special opportunity highlighting Schiele Museum research and fantastic, unusual, and rare items usually not on display.
Fossil Fair 2010
February 21 – February 22, Saturday 9 AM – 4 PM, Sunday 1 – 4 PM

More than a fossil show, this event spotlights all sorts of natural treasures from the earth including fossils, rocks, minerals and the ancient stories that these items tell. Enjoy special presentations by guest speaker Peter Larson of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research and excavator of the famed Tyrannosaurus "Sue". See museum and fossil club displays and purchase interesting specimens from vendors. Mine for gemstones like garnets, emeralds and amethyst. Kids can meet animated prehistoric characters, see a full-sized T. rex, make a fossil fish print, search for tiny fossils from the Carolina Coast, and much more. Sponge, Splotch & Scratch: Slip Decorating Techniques on Redware

Watch and learn the traditional pottery making process from wheel to kiln under expert instruction at Westmoore Pottery. Explore the fascinating art of slip decoration on redware, with an emphasis on styles from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Participants make a series of redware tiles, and decorate them with clay slips, using the following techniques: Sgraffito, feathering or combing, slip-trailing, marbled slips, scratching, sponging, and splotching. Participants may keep up to 8 tiles apiece. This workshop is geared toward the beginner who has never before worked with slip decorating. Includes transportation, lodging, and materials including an autographed copy of Decorative Motifs of the Southern Backcountry by Kay Moss, Schiele Museum.
